A Trip of a lifetime round Cape Horn 2012

Hans Gutmann an exceptional Austrian pilot and President of the FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) General Aviation Comission (read an interview with Hans) is again arranging a once in a lifetime trip. Many of you may know that PWP Feroz Wadia and Myself undertook the last event organised by Hans - the FAI Round The World Trip 2009 (You can read my Blog about it at http://www.simonpbarlow.wordpress.com/)

This time Hans has planned a route round across the Atlantic and round South America. The start from Europe will be from the famous Red Bull Hanger at Salzburg (LOWS) airport.

The official start will be on Wednesday, 15th February 2012 in Savannah/Georgia KSAV

Note: There will be a maximum of 10 aircraft on this trip!

The proposed routing is as follows:

AUSTRIA - GERMANY- SCOTLAND - ICELAND- GREENLAND - CANADA - NEW YORK - GEORGIA - BAHAMAS - ANTILLES - TOBAGO/TRINIDAD - BRAZIL - ARGENTINA - CHILE - PERU - ECUADOR - COLOMBIA - PANAMA - COSTA RICA - GUATEMALA - MEXICO - TEXAS - LOUISIANA - FLORIDA - VIRGINIA - CANADA - GREENLAND - ICELAND - SCOTLAND - GERMANY - AUSTRIA.

TOTAL DISTANCE (Austria - Austria): about 23,000 NM, longest leg 700 NM

Participating planes leave central Europe as a group on Saturday, 4th February 2012.

Official start for the FAI - AROUND CAPE HORN - 2012, will be on Wednesday, 15th February 2012 in Savannah/Georgia KSAV. (See planning document below)

Assistance can be provided to park your aircraft in Florida from late fall 2011 to official date of start. On the way back to Europe we arrive Lakeland/ Florida (KABQ), for the SUN&FUN fair with earthrounder´s meeting on Wednesday 28th March 2012. Finish line for this long distance flight event, will be Salzburg/Austria (LOWS) RED BULL HANGAR 7 on Saturday, 7th April 2012.
