Letter from the President:

June 1, 2006

Greetings Fellow IFFR members,

Waco, Texas is about 350 miles east of Midland and the round trip takes a tad bit under four hours depending on the restricted air space usage and how much diverting around you have to do.   If President Bush is at his Crawford ranch, add thirty minutes for P-49 and plan on getting looked at by some young jet jockey as you start your decent.  The good news is that I have four granddaughters in Waco and any excuse to visit works for me.  Flying to see our grandchildren is a good excuse to fly any day!

This visit was rather unusual as my daughter arranged from me to speak to the Midway-Waco Day Break Rotary Club about IFFR.  By the way, I checked with my CPA and he assured me this made the trip expense deductible which is an added plus since Rotary is a non-profit organization.  I spoke to a group of about fifty or so Rotarians and their guests using a power point slide show with photos from recent Fly-Abouts.  I used photos from the web and from my collection of Australia, Red Rock, Chicago, and Midland.  The message I wanted to send to this club was as follows:

We are about international fellowship; we are about making
new friends for all cultures; we are about helping; and we
are about sharing.

I used photos showing how the local Rotary clubs took us under their care and provided us with their unique local touch of culture, whether it be from holding a “Roo” in Australia or watching an Aboriginal cultural dance or having brunch under a tent on the river bank near Niagara Falls.  I told them you could book all the tours in the world and never get the flavor of the land like we do with the IFFR.  Truly, we are a group who taste the flavor of the world’s culture in a special way.

As things normally go with me, I learned more from feedback than they did from my talk.  I found out that several of these Rotarians had invited pilot guests who will now be potential members of their club.  I also found out that no one in that room had heard of IFFR and were somewhat mystified at this well kept secret.

So the message:  Share IFFR.  I encourage each of you to tell our story to other clubs and to folks who would join Rotary to become one of us.  Volunteer to speak to clubs throughout your locality and pass the message.  Our organization is truly unique and we should not keep the secret any longer.

Fred Newman
